The opportunity

 

We are seeking an experienced Manager to join our Payroll and Employment Tax (PET) advisory team in Toronto. In this role, you will lead and manage complex Canadian payroll advisory engagements for a diverse client base. You’ll gain valuable experience across capabilities, sectors, and geographies while helping Canadian clients manage risk, identify tax-saving opportunities, and meet payroll tax, social security, and related compliance obligations.

 

Your key responsibilities

  • Conduct Canadian payroll compliance reviews and deliver strategic payroll advisory services
  • Advise clients on payroll strategy, compliance risks, and leading practices to optimize payroll operations
  • Support compliance with Canadian federal, and provincial payroll legislation, and regulations
  • Provide guidance on payroll processes, including multi-jurisdictional payrolls, tax calculations, deductions, benefits, and statutory remittances
  • Prepare and review payroll tax filings, reports, and reconciliations with the CRA, and other regulatory authorities
  • Work with clients, HR, finance teams, and regulatory bodies to resolve payroll issues, and support smooth operations
  • Stay current with evolving payroll legislation, industry trends, and emerging technologies
  • Manage multiple client engagements, including budgets, resources, invoicing, and collections
  • Assist clients with employment tax audits, and respond to payroll-related inquiries
  • Mentor junior colleagues on technical, payroll advisory, and performance management skills while fostering a positive team culture

 

Skills and attributes for success

  • Ideally, you’ll also have a strong knowledge of Canadian federal and provincial payroll legislation, including employment and labour standards, compliance requirements, and multi-jurisdictional payroll processes
  • Proven experience with payroll tax filings, reporting, reconciliations, and statutory remittances with the CRA, and other regulatory bodies
  • Proficiency with leading payroll software and ERP systems, with the ability to improve payroll operations, and lead projects
  • Skilled in advising clients on payroll strategy, compliance risks, and best practices to improve operational efficiency
  • Strong analytical, and problem-solving skills, as well as high attention-to-detail, particularly in payroll data management and compliance issue resolution
  • Excellent stakeholder management, and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with clients, HR, finance, and regulators
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced, client-focused environment managing multiple priorities and deadlines
  • Commitment to continuous professional development, with the ability to research and resolve payroll tax questions and issues

 

What we look for

  • A minimum of 8 years of experience in Canadian payroll advisory and compliance services
  • A bachelor’s degree, preferably in business, and/or a Payroll Compliance Professional designation
  • Excellent verbal and written English communication skills
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

EY reports salary ranges in accordance with applicable provincial pay transparency legislation. Individual salaries within the anticipated salary ranges noted below are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to internal equity, education, relevant experience, knowledge, and applicable skill sets. 

  • Toronto: 88k to 132k
