Senior AI Engineer - Oceania Tax Technology - CTO Tax Office - EY Rank of Senior Manager or Associate Director
The opportunity
EY is on the lookout for a technically adept and visionary technologist to take on the role of Senior AI Engineer, with a focus on delivering cutting-edge AI solutions. As our Senior AI Engineer, you will lead the experimentation, prototyping and deployment of advanced AI and Generative AI solutions. Working with leading foundation models and orchestration frameworks, you will translate emerging capabilities into practical, commercially viable solutions.
The ideal candidate will be at the forefront of designing and executing innovative GenAI solutions and will provide technical guidance to a team of skilled and junior data scientists and engineers. This role demands a strong combination of technical prowess, sector-specific insight and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with senior tax executives, work closely with our Tax business, and partner with EY’s technology teams and platforms to deliver practical, commercially viable solutions.
You’ll design and deploy AI/ML and Generative AI applications that transform business processes and deliver measurable impact for EY clients. Here’s where you’ll make your mark:

You’ll be part of our Tax Technology team within the Office of the CTO, driving innovation and applying modern frameworks to deliver enterprise-grade AI solutions.
This is a hybrid position based in Naarm – Melbourne, Meanjin – Brisbane, Warrang – Sydney.
Your key responsibilities
- Demonstrate expertise in AI/ML and Generative AI, including hands-on experience with leading LLMs (such as OpenAI and Anthropic), prompt engineering, and low-code platforms.
- Apply knowledge of Agentic Systems, including multi-agent orchestration, tool/function calling, and leveraging low-code technologies.
- Lead the prototyping and deployment of AI and Generative AI solutions to support client engagements and scalable offerings across sectors.
- Collaborate with EY Tax Leadership and engage with Heads of Tax, CTOs, and CDOs to explore and deliver technical generative AI solutions.
- Maintain advanced knowledge of AI solution architecture and data science methodologies to design innovative solutions.
- Act as a technical thought leader by emphasising the impact of data and AI in transforming tax organisations and solving complex challenges.
- Support go-to-market strategies for GenAI services by offering technical insights and integrating AI solutions within EY's broader service offerings.
Skills and attributes for success
- Strong foundation in AI/ML and Generative AI, including experience with LLMs (OpenAI, Anthropic), prompt engineering, and low-code technologies
- Knowledge of Agentic Systems, such as multi-agent orchestration, tool/function calling, and low-code platforms
- At least 12 years of professional experience, predominantly in a technical leadership role within the data science/AI field.
- Demonstrable success in designing and deploying AI solutions, with a preference for experience in the Financial Services and Tax industries.
- In-depth knowledge of AI solution architecture and data science, with practical experience in these domains.
- Up-to-date with the latest advancements in generative AI, data fabrics, and data transformation technologies.
- Advanced degree in Computer Science, Data Science, AI, or a related technical field.
- Professional certifications in AI, data science, or related technical fields are highly regarded.

- Proven leadership and team development skills, with a track record of managing high-performing technical teams.
- Excellent communication skills, capable of explaining intricate technical details to a non-technical audience.
- Strong interpersonal abilities, adept at forging relationships and influencing technical decision-making.
- Strategic and analytical thinker with a problem-solving mindset focused on technical innovation.
Ideally, you’ll also have the skills and attributes below, but don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes. We’re interested in your aptitude, attitude and willingness to learn.
- Awareness of Responsible AI & Security, including ethical AI principles, compliance frameworks, and guardrails for sensitive use cases.
- Proficiency in Programming, especially advanced Python, API development, and solid software engineering practices; front-end exposure (React/TypeScript) is a bonus.
- Curiosity and adaptability to learn emerging technologies and frameworks quickly.
- Strong problem-solving mindset and ability to work collaboratively in dynamic environments.
