Full Stack Developer (Legacy) - Manager
The opportunity
As our Full Stack Developer you will take ownership of a large-scale enterprise platform that supports operational workflows, data services, and integrations across a complex technology estate. The role is primarily focused on designing, developing, testing, releasing, and supporting production-grade Python services and APIs.
The successful candidate will work across the full software development lifecycle, from understanding requirements and shaping the technical roadmap through solution design, implementation, automated testing, deployment, production support, and continuous improvement. This is a hands-on engineering role requiring strong backend capability, sound distributed-systems thinking, and the ability to work confidently in on-premises containerised environments.
This is a hybrid position based in Boorloo – Perth. Our roles can potentially be adjusted to work flexibly with reduced hours. Please speak with us about potential options.
Your key responsibilities
Application Ownership & Full SDLC Delivery
- Own and contribute to the complete SDLC, including discovery, estimation, technical design, implementation, testing, release, support, and continuous improvement.
- Translate functional and non-functional requirements into maintainable, secure, and supportable technical solutions.
- Deliver new features and enhancements in line with product roadmaps, priorities, quality standards, and release commitments.
- Participate in technical planning, backlog refinement, code reviews, design discussions, and engineering governance.
- Investigate production issues, perform root-cause analysis, and implement permanent fixes and preventative improvements.
Solution Design & Architecture
- Design and evolve scalable microservices and API-based solutions for a large enterprise platform.
- Apply sound principles for service boundaries, modularity, resiliency, observability, security, configuration, and backward compatibility.
- Document technical designs, interfaces, dependencies, operational considerations, and key architectural decisions.
- Identify technical risks, manage dependencies, and contribute to modernisation and roadmap planning.
Backend & API Development
- Develop and maintain production-grade Python services using Flask and OpenAPI-based API patterns.
- Implement business logic, validation, authentication and authorisation hooks, structured error handling, and consistent API contracts.
- Build reusable service components and endpoint modules that are clear, testable, and easy to operate.
- Work with contract-based interfaces, including generated protocol definitions where required, while maintaining compatibility across dependent services.
- Apply secure coding practices and engineering standards throughout the codebase.
Service Communication & Enterprise Integrations
- Design, implement, and support service-to-service communication using ZeroMQ and other integration patterns as required.
- Develop and maintain integrations with internal and external systems, handling authentication, timeouts, retries, failure modes, and operational diagnostics.
- Collaborate with integration owners and platform teams to define clear interface contracts and dependable data flows.
- Monitor integration health and resolve issues across service, network, contract, and data boundaries.
Data & Database Engineering
- Develop and support data access layers using PostgreSQL and Python database tooling such as SQLAlchemy and psycopg2.
- Work effectively across a large distributed estate of PostgreSQL databases, considering schema consistency, data integrity, performance, and operational impact.
- Design efficient queries, diagnose database-related issues, and contribute to schema changes, migrations, and data maintenance activities.
- Apply appropriate transaction, connection-management, backup, recovery, and security considerations in collaboration with database specialists.
On-Premises Infrastructure & DevOps
- Build, package, deploy, and support containerised services using Docker in Linux-based on-premises environments.
- Operate and troubleshoot services across container orchestration environments, including Nomad where applicable.
- Contribute to CI/CD pipelines, automated build and release processes, configuration management, and environment promotion.
- Use application logs, metrics, traces, health checks, and operational runbooks to support reliable production services.
- Follow approved change, incident, problem, vulnerability, and release-management processes.
Testing & Quality Engineering
- Create and maintain unit, integration, API, and regression tests using Python testing frameworks such as pytest.
- Validate service contracts, database interactions, message flows, error handling, and failure scenarios.
- Contribute to broader automated test suites, including acceptance or browser-based testing where applicable.
- Promote testability, code quality, static analysis, peer review, and continuous quality improvement.
Frontend & User-Facing Capability
- Support user-facing features and operational dashboards when required, integrating frontend workflows with backend APIs and data services.
- Contribute to data presentation, filtering, tables, dashboards, validation, and error handling where the role requires cross-stack delivery.
Skills and attributes for success
- Proven experience as a Full Stack Developer or Backend-focused Full Stack Developer delivering and supporting enterprise applications through the full SDLC.
- Strong commercial experience developing production services and APIs in Python.
- Hands-on experience with Flask or a comparable Python web/API framework and OpenAPI or equivalent API specification practices.
- Practical experience designing or supporting microservices and distributed systems in production.
- Hands-on experience with PostgreSQL, including SQL, data modelling, query optimisation, and production troubleshooting.
- Experience with asynchronous or message-based service communication; ZeroMQ experience is strongly required for this role.
- Experience building and operating Docker containers in Linux environments, ideally in an on-premises or hybrid enterprise setting.
- Experience with automated testing, code review, version control, and CI/CD practices.
- Strong troubleshooting, communication, documentation, and stakeholder-collaboration skills.
- Ability to work independently, manage competing priorities, and make sound engineering decisions in a complex application landscape.
Core Technical Skills
- Python, Flask, REST APIs, OpenAPI, authentication and authorisation, structured logging, and error handling
- Microservices, distributed systems, service contracts, ZeroMQ, asynchronous communication, and integration patterns
- PostgreSQL, SQLAlchemy, psycopg2, SQL, schema design, migrations, and database performance
- Docker, Linux, container lifecycle management, configuration, observability, and production support
- Git-based development, CI/CD, automated testing, pytest, code review, and secure software delivery
Ideally, you’ll also have the skills and attributes below but don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes. We’re interested in your aptitude, attitude and willingness to learn.
- Experience working with C++, CMake, Conan, native libraries, or mixed-language Python/native applications.
- Experience with Django, React, TypeScript, or comparable technologies for dashboards and user-facing operational tools.
- Experience with Nomad, Jenkins, RPM/CPack packaging, or enterprise release automation.
- Experience with protocol buffers or other strongly typed service-contract technologies.
- Experience supporting large operational, industrial, geospatial, or data-intensive applications.
- Experience with reliability engineering, performance testing, security remediation, and technical debt reduction.
