The opportunity

Our Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review COE is a national team which leads large multi-state, sales and use tax recovery projects for EY’s largest clients. It’s here you’ll find everything you need to continue to develop as a multi-state, sales and use tax practitioner. Handling multi-state sales/use tax recovery projects for large, sophisticated organizations takes more than just a technical understanding of current sales and use tax rules. As a Sales and Use Tax Manager, assigned to EY’s Sales and Use Tax Lookback Review Center of Excellence (COE), we’ll look to you to build and apply your knowledge on a wide range of sales and use tax recovery projects for clients in multiple industries. Advise on indirect tax regulatory changes; design strategies, operating models, processes, and compliance frameworks that raise efficiency and meet requirements. Identify opportunities for tax optimization, credits and refund recovery, exposure reduction; manage strategies, compliance, remediation, controversies, and corrective filings. Support process review and technology transformation.

  • Translate regulatory changes into practical compliance and reporting solutions.
  • Implement operating models and frameworks across the indirect tax lifecycle.
  • Lead optimization, recovery, and exposure‑reduction initiatives.

 

Your key responsibilities

Lead workstream delivery, track status and deliverables, and participate in client working sessions. Identify opportunities for additional services, contribute to RFPs, manage engagement economics, and implement resource plans and budgets. Guide teams, drive improvement, and recommend solutions by interpreting internal/external issues. Travel required regularly for external clients.

  • Develop solutions to complex problems and select suitable methods and criteria.
  • Recommend policy changes and establish procedures for your area or function.
  • Apply depth of expertise to guide others toward quality solutions.
  • Research our clients’ business operations and building long-lasting relationships with them
  • Identify applicable sales and use tax exemptions and exclusions
  • Identify potential overpayment opportunities or risks and communicating these to our clients
  • Monitor current tax law changes, to maintain your credibility as a trusted advisor
  • Develop clear, intelligent plans and approaches for sales and use tax recoveries
  • Prepare and defend sales and use tax refund claims
  • Participate on a motivated team of professionals
  • Manage a motivated team of professionals, guaranteeing they have the skills, knowledge and opportunities to reach their full potential

To qualify for the role, you must have

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business or a related discipline
  • An achieved CPA qualification, member of a state Bar, certification as a member of the Institute for Professionals in Taxation or CMI designation
  • A minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in a broad range of sales and use tax processes, concepts and tools
  • Experience managing budgets, people and projects
  • A proven record of excellence in a professional services or tax organization
  • Technical writing and research experience in a tax context
  • The ability to prioritize when working on multiple complex projects
  • Strong influencing skills, and the confidence to question existing processes
  • Tax legislation and impact assessment.

  • Experience leading workstreams across planning, execution, and closure.

  • We offer a comprehensive compensation and benefits package where you’ll be rewarded based on your performance and recognized for the value you bring to the business.  The base salary range for this job in all geographic locations in the US is $105,100 to $192,600.  The base salary range for New York City Metro Area, Washington State and California (excluding Sacramento) is $126,100 to $218,900.  Individual salaries within those ranges are determined through a wide variety of factors including but not limited to education, experience, knowledge, skills and geography.  In addition, our Total Rewards package includes medical and dental coverage, pension and 401(k) plans, and a wide range of paid time off options.
  • Join us in our team-led and leader-enabled hybrid model. Our expectation is for most people in external, client serving roles to work together in person 60% of the time over the course of an engagement, project or year.
