EY’s multidisciplinary Quantitative Services – QS - team, specializing in tax credits for Scientific Research and Experimental Development – SRED and Grants - is seeking a candidate to deliver advisory services to our clients in Quebec serving companies in the Life Science, Pharmacology and Medical Devices Industries.

Position description:

As a Manager in EY’s QS SRED practice.  You will be part of a dynamic group of tax, audit, science, and technology professionals who work with companies of all sizes in a variety of industries, to help them maximize their tax credits and achieve their business objectives. This involves meeting with CEOs, CTOs and Engineers and Scientist to assess their project's eligibility to receive funding, establishing claim size, and writing technical project descriptions that detail the innovation and development activities for each project. You will discuss new prototypes, experimental trials, process improvements, and new product development for some of the leading companies in Canada. If you want to be exposed to exciting Research and Development initiatives and learn from leaders in the field, this role is for you.

This is an ideal opportunity for someone who has a bachelor’s degree in sciences such as biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and want to continue their career in that space but with more exposure to the business and financial side of an organization. If you are inquisitive and expressive, you will find this position both stimulating and rewarding, with great growth and learning opportunities.

Core elements of the role include.

  • Meeting with clients to leverage your broad knowledge of scientific and engineering principles to identify opportunities for claiming SRED. This includes assessing their eligibility to receive funding, establishing how much they can claim, and writing technical project descriptions that detail the innovation and development activities for each project
  • Acting as a principle point of contact for all incentives queries, and ensuring clients are provided with the most up to date legislative developments and direct funding programs
  • Execution of a variety of corporate tax credit and incentive assignments including planning, compliance, and review with government authorities
  • Coaching and mentoring more junior staff to execute assignments with accuracy and completeness
  • Working collaboratively with internal financial experts to collaboratively prepare robust and defensible claims
  • Communicating with internal colleagues and external stakeholders to balance a portfolio of clients and prioritize deadlines while maintaining exceptional client service
  • Identifying opportunities for tax planning and other specialty services and contributing to thought leadership materials
  • Participating in market initiatives and networking events
  • Demonstrating professionalism through a positive and cooperative approach and by maintaining the confidential and proprietary nature of client relationships and related work products

  • A bachelor’s degree or Diploma in Science or related discipline. A Graduate’s Degree is a strong asset.
  • Knowledge of the Life Science, Pharma and Medical Devices areas with burgeoning technological advancement is an asset.
  • The ability to think creatively and deliver on the spot solutions for client problems.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, strong interpersonal abilities and an unwavering focus on client-centricity.
  • The drive needed to be a self-starter as well as the ability to understand stakeholder needs and work proactively to build strong, enduring relationships.
  • The ability to work effectively within a dynamic, team environment while managing pressure and adhering to strict deadlines.
  • Business level proficiency in English is required as this position works with national clients, in non-French speaking provinces. French English bilingualism is an asset.

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Prior work experience in Tax or Business Incentives and a strong interest in learning more about innovative Research and Development
  • 4 or more years of technical writing experience for SRED claims, grant funding or similar applications.
  • A broad interest in emerging science and technology along with a passion for helping Canadian innovators grow their businesses.

What we look for

We’re interested in strong team players who support their colleagues in reaching their goals while also considering their own workload and development. We’re looking for people with a genuine passion for tax, and the future of tax, and are inspired to help the world’s leading multinational organizations meet complex tax obligations around the world. If you have the confidence to speak up and influence a team that affects big businesses worldwide, this role is for you.
