Senior Consultant, Retail Banking, Regulatory Advisory
In today’s rapidly advancing world, what clients, EY people, and all stakeholders want and need from EY is changing – innovation and agility are more important than ever. In order to deliver long-term value for our clients at EY, we are looking for minds made for financial services who can meet these demands. This will mean using your technical knowledge as well as your ability to work in a team to deliver for your client. Our team works with some of the most prestigious financial firms in the world, and as a Senior Consultant you will be an integral part of this.
The opportunity
Financial Services is changing, fuelled by innovation, technology and AI. We are striving to lead this transformation with our clients, helping them respond to new technologies, market developments and changing customer needs in line with UK regulatory expectations. Success in this role requires that you understand the regulatory and competitive landscape our clients operate in, including Consumer Duty, conduct and payments regulation, and that you can work with them to understand the implications for their business and operating models.
We’re currently growing our Regulatory Advisory team across all capabilities to help meet increasing demand, including the Retail Banking team. We are delivering a number of large scale and strategic projects with some of the UK’s largest and most innovative financial services institutions.
You will work as part of a wider EY team alongside Managers, Senior Managers, Directors and Partners to provide knowledge, create insights and deliver solutions, including technology-enabled regulatory solutions. Our clients consist of traditional retail banks, consumer credit firms, payment firms and new market entrants who are innovating in this space. We are looking for individuals with experience across this sector who can help our clients deliver on their ambitions while meeting regulatory expectations. As part of our team, you will be asked to generate innovative ideas, support delivery of high-quality client work and contribute to practical regulatory solutions.
At EY, our Consulting professionals work with some of the world’s most recognised brands to tackle today’s complex issues and capitalise on opportunities that help them to grow, optimise and protect their businesses now and in the future. Our people are part of diverse, multidisciplinary, high-performing and highly connected teams that bring the best of EY to our clients.
The provision of financial services and the associated controls firms require are evolving in new and interesting ways. Technological advancement, changing consumer behaviour, competition and regulatory expectations are driving this change, and we are working to build suitable regulatory solutions with our clients. The solutions and skillset our clients require increasingly combine traditional regulatory insight with an ability to understand the opportunities and risks created by technology and AI, including how these can be responsibly embedded into firms’ operating models, controls and customer journeys.
Your key responsibilities
- You will understand the UK regulatory changes our retail banking clients face, including Consumer Duty, conduct and payments regulation, and deliver analysis and insight to help them work through these changes
- You will support the development of EY service offerings. In particular you should have an understanding of how technical solutions can help clients solve their regulatory challenges
- You will build credible relationships with clients by demonstrating both technical skills and an ability to apply these skills to help them resolve regulatory, conduct and operating model issues
- You will support the analysis of emerging solutions and innovative ideas including the development of EY points of view
- You will work effectively as a team member, sharing responsibility, providing support, maintaining communication, supporting junior colleagues where appropriate, and updating senior team members on progress
- You will be involved in preparing high-quality reports and client deliverables that draw out key industry and regulatory insights
- You will get involved in client campaigns, from researching new regulations, including Consumer Duty developments, to assisting effective business and operating model implementation
- You will develop presentations that are clear and impactful, translating EY services into meaningful value propositions for clients
- You will help identify where information should be sourced, and draw this evidence together as the foundation on which the team will base their recommendations
- You will help manage engagement financials, working with the team to determine whether requirements are adequately defined and documented
Skills and attributes for success
- A clear understanding of the strategic implications of UK regulation, including Consumer Duty and its impact on firms’ strategy, governance, operating models, customer journeys and customer outcomes
- Strong insights into UK Retail Banking regulation, including Consumer Duty, payments regulation, conduct and customer outcomes
- Demonstrable awareness of regulatory trends and the impacts of technology and AI on clients’ business models, operating models and operations
- Ability to translate regulatory requirements, including Consumer Duty expectations, into practical business, governance, control and operating model solutions
- Involvement in and awareness of the remediation of regulatory issues, including Consumer Duty gaps, customer harm and poor customer outcomes
- Strong understanding of UK conduct risk, including Consumer Duty and how conduct expectations apply across retail banking, consumer credit and payments business models
- Good stakeholder management skills and experience influencing senior personnel
- Ability to build relationships with colleagues across Consulting and the wider business, supporting them and promoting a collaborative culture
We are looking for individuals with
- Relevant UK conduct, regulatory, Consumer Duty and/or payments experience within retail financial services. This may be from working at an existing financial services organisation, a dynamic new market entrant, a payments firm or a relevant UK regulator. You may also have worked for another consultancy firm or relevant industry body.
- Knowledge and practical experience of the FCA Handbook and current UK regulatory topics, with Consumer Duty experience being critical, alongside conduct, retail banking and payments regulation
- A strong interest in AI and emerging technologies and their role in solving regulatory challenges, improving delivery and supporting responsible innovation
- Great communication skills, with the ability to work with a variety of stakeholders at all levels and to envision the bigger picture
- Flexibility – both in your approach and your openness to travel where required by the client
- Enthusiasm and a real desire to work effectively as part of a team to achieve shared objectives
- Clear evidence of successful performance in previous roles
What we are looking for
You’ll be a trusted business advisor to our clients, specialising in regulatory matters. You will have strong experience across retail banking, consumer credit and payments, with critical knowledge and experience of Consumer Duty and the ability to apply UK conduct and regulatory expectations to a range of business models, operating models and customer journeys. Ideally you will have experience of regulatory implementation and reviews, including helping clients assess and transform their operating models, governance, controls, processes and customer outcomes in response to regulatory change and Consumer Duty expectations. This may include having worked on conduct risk management, product and customer reviews, regulatory enforcement, customer remediation programmes, regulatory implementation or s166 reviews. Specific topics may have included an FCA Section 166 review, authorisations, management of customers in financial difficulty, Consumer Duty or payments regulation.
We are also looking for individuals with experience developing, introducing or assessing regulatory technology and enablers, including where technology, data and AI support regulatory compliance, improved controls and better customer outcomes. This is ideally suited to professionals who enjoy working in a collaborative and teaming environment.
