Manager – Finance Transformation

Profile summary

The Finance Business Consulting team is looking for a Manager with a strong delivery track record in Finance Transformation, who can bring business and technology-based solutions together to deliver outcomes for our clients.

This is a hands-on delivery role. You will run workstreams, produce and quality-assure the work, and lead a small team day to day. You will work closely with our Senior Managers and Partners, and take increasing ownership of client relationships as you establish yourself.

Prior consulting experience is essential, alongside experience of delivering Finance Transformation programmes in Financial Services, ideally with a Big 4 or top-tier firm. We work across Banking, Capital Markets and Insurance, and we welcome candidates with depth in any of these sectors.

The role calls for an adaptable individual who is comfortable across a wide range of client issues. The nature of our work varies considerably, so you should be at ease taking on different delivery roles and the challenges that come with them.

Your responsibilities

As a Manager in our Finance Business Consulting team, you will lead workstreams within target operating model design and implementation programmes across Banking, Capital Markets and Insurance. You will be responsible for the quality of what your team produces and for turning client requirements into a design that works.

Specific responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Leading workstreams within large and complex end-to-end Finance Transformations, and managing the day-to-day delivery plan for that workstream
  • Building a working understanding of the Financial Services target operating model, including finance processes across Banking and Insurance, controls frameworks, and the common pain points such as manual processing and reliance on end-user computing
  • Running requirements gathering and assessing the current organisation structure, processes, controls and operating model
  • Contributing to target operating model and organisation design under the direction of the engagement lead, and producing the underlying analysis and deliverables
  • Supporting working day timetable design and the delivery of an accelerated close
  • Running design workshops, drawing out the client's business requirements and translating them into a leading-practice process and business design
  • Delivering business readiness and change management activity that takes the client through go-live and into business as usual
  • Supporting the business workstream of ERP and EPM implementations, including business process design, testing support and cutover activity
  • Using AI to accelerate delivery – for example in analysis, process documentation, deliverable drafting and quality checking – and applying sensible judgement about what needs human review
  • Using AI as a thinking partner: exploring options, testing your own logic and pressure-testing deliverables before they go for review
  • Managing and developing a small delivery team, reviewing their outputs and giving clear, constructive guidance
  • Taking personal responsibility for the quality of what your workstream produces
  • Supporting engagement financial management, including forecasting, resourcing and reporting against budget
  • Supporting business development, including research on new and existing clients and contributing content to proposals and bids
  • Building internal and client networks, and beginning to develop the relationships that lead to future work
  • Contributing to the growth of the practice through EY points of view, solutions, engagement tools and enablers
  • Coaching and supervising junior colleagues and supporting their development
  • Keeping current with industry developments and the technologies, reporting standards and trends shaping Financial Services
  • Supporting quality assurance and risk monitoring across your workstream

Professional experience

Typical experience may include, but is not limited to:

  • Prior consulting experience is essential, preferably with a Big 4 or top-tier consulting firm
  • Experience delivering Finance Transformation programmes in Financial Services – Banking, Capital Markets or Insurance
  • Experience of two or three Finance Transformations in Financial Services
  • Business architect experience on Finance Transformations, delivering the business-focused elements of a client's target operating model: organisation design, process and controls, working day timetable, change management, training and business readiness
  • An understanding of how finance technology is used to solve client problems, and experience working with technology partners across the spectrum from low-code tooling through to ERP and EPM capability
  • Some practical experience of using AI tools in a delivery context

Finance Transformation experience should span:

  • Current-state assessment of a client's operating model
  • Identification of pain points and requirements to underpin a transformation
  • Target process taxonomy and process design, from Level 1 through to Level 4
  • Leading-practice controls frameworks and finance controls
  • Working day timetable design and improvement
  • The processes that surround Finance – Risk, Front Office, Actuarial, IT and others
  • Standard operating procedures
  • Contributing to a business design that meets the client's ambition: greater automation and standardisation, fewer manual processes, lower cost, leading-practice processes and a fit-for-purpose organisation
  • Delivering across all transformation phases – business case and discovery, design, implementation, business readiness, testing, training, go-live and post go-live support

Skills

Finance Transformation skills

  • Good working knowledge of Finance Transformation, particularly the business architecture side of a programme
  • The ability to deliver components of a business design, covering:
    • Organisation design
    • Process taxonomy, processes and controls
    • Working day timetable
    • Design that drives automation and standardisation
    • Change management and business readiness implementation
    • Training approach and materials
    • Support model and processes
    • Cutover and transition into business as usual
  • Reviewing functional and technical designs against business requirements, and raising challenges where they do not hold up
  • Taking written deliverables from early storyboarding through to content delivery and client sign-off

Working with AI

  • Confident using AI tools to accelerate your own work, and able to judge where output needs checking before it goes for review
  • Comfortable using AI as a thinking partner – to explore options, test logic and sense-check a deliverable
  • Curious about how AI and automation change the way a finance function operates, and keen to build that into the designs you work on

Consulting skills

  • Excellent communication and presentation skills, used consistently with people at every level of an organisation
  • Comfortable and confident around senior stakeholders, internally and externally
  • Able to lead a small team and get the best from the people in it
  • High level of drive, a commitment to finding solutions, and the ability to work well under pressure
  • Confident and comfortable with uncertainty and ambiguity in a project environment
  • Able to apply logic and structured problem solving to complex finance problems
  • A good grasp of the key issues and challenges currently facing CFOs in Financial Services
  • Takes personal responsibility for the quality of delivery
  • Instils a positive team mentality, even under pressure, by treating colleagues well and creating an inclusive culture
  • Extremely comfortable with PowerPoint, Excel and Visio. Much of our work involves detailed analysis and deliverable writing, so it is critical that you can work with these tools

Qualifications

  • A first-level university degree at 2:1 or equivalent is common, but not compulsory
  • An accounting qualification (ACA, ACMA, ACCA) applied within a financial institution would be beneficial, but is not essential
