The opportunity

EY is seeking an experienced Senior Manager / Director to join its leading CBAM team across the UK and Europe. The successful candidate will bring deep expertise in carbon markets and a strong understanding of the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and related regulatory developments. The role focuses on supporting clients to assess business implications, address compliance requirements and define mitigating actions in response to a rapidly evolving regulatory landscape. The individual will work closely with teams across Tax, Sustainability, Supply Chain and other service lines to deliver integrated, high-quality support to clients.

Key skills and qualifications:

  • Deep experience in CBAM, carbon pricing, emissions trading systems and broader carbon market mechanisms, gained in consulting, industry, policy or regulatory environments.
  • Strong understanding of the impact of carbon regulation on business models, supply chains, procurement, pricing, competitiveness and cross-border trade.
  • Experience advising clients on compliance obligations and mitigating actions, including data readiness, sourcing strategy, contractual implications and decarbonisation pathways.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to translate complex regulatory and market developments into clear business implications for senior stakeholders.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead workstreams, support business development and contribute to the growth of a high-performing cross-border team at Senior Manager or Director level.
  • Demonstrated track record in sectors materially affected by CBAM.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Client advisory and delivery
    • Advise clients on the business implications of CBAM and related carbon pricing developments, including financial, operational, commercial and supply chain impacts.
    • Support clients in interpreting compliance requirements, conducting readiness assessments and addressing reporting, data and governance challenges.
    • Identify and assess mitigating actions, including supplier engagement, sourcing changes, emissions data improvement, contractual responses and longer-term decarbonisation options.
    • Work with multidisciplinary EY teams to deliver integrated advice across tax, trade, sustainability, operations and technology.
    • Develop client-facing materials and deliverables that translate regulatory complexity into clear, actionable business decisions.
    • Contribute carbon market and CBAM expertise to support consistent, high-quality delivery across the UK and European team.
  • Market insight and thought leadership
    • Monitor developments in CBAM, ETS and broader carbon market regulation across Europe and beyond, and translate them into practical insights for clients and internal teams.
    • Support the development of EY’s market proposition through thought leadership, internal enablement and contributions to proposals and external materials.
  • Business development and team contribution
    • Support business development by identifying opportunities, shaping proposals and contributing to client relationship development in the CBAM and carbon markets space.
    • Mentor junior team members, support capability building and help strengthen EY’s position as a leading CBAM team across the UK and Europe.

Preferred background:

  • Relevant experience in consulting, industry, public policy, trading, sustainability, tax or regulation related to CBAM, ETS or carbon markets.
  • Strong commercial acumen and the ability to combine regulatory knowledge with practical business advice for companies and sectors affected by CBAM and related measures.
  • Experience working across jurisdictions and functions in an international and evolving regulatory environment.
  • Ability to engage credibly with senior stakeholders on technical matters in a solution-oriented and collaborative manner.
