Senior Consultant – Subsurface (O&G Upstream)
Desired Experience: 3–6 years
Mandatory Skill:
- Subsurface (Reservoir / Petroleum / Production Engineering domain depth)
Preferred Background:
- Experience with Integrated Oil Companies such as Exxon Mobil / Shell / BP
Role Purpose
Subsurface Subject Matter Expert (SME) embedded within a digital / AI use case delivery squad, acting as the functional bridge between upstream subsurface stakeholders and cross-functional technical teams (product, data science, data engineering, architecture). The role is non-coding and focuses on shaping, translating, validating, and governing subsurface analytics / AI solutions across the upstream value chain.
Operating Model & Reporting
- Individual contributor role within an Agile / product-style delivery environment; supports functional delivery of subsurface use cases from discovery to deployment.
- Works closely with upstream business teams (subsurface, production interface points) and technical delivery teams (product managers, data scientists, data engineers, solution architects).
- Reports to Senior Manager / Manager – Subsurface (O&G Upstream) and supports Consulting Delivery Leadership priorities for SC&O / Digital Ops engagements.
Key Responsibilities
- Subsurface Use Case Discovery & Functional Support
- Support discovery workshops with subsurface stakeholders to capture decision workflows, value drivers, pain points, uncertainties, and success criteria.
- Draft and maintain structured documentation under Manager guidance: use case descriptions, functional requirements, assumptions, constraints, and acceptance criteria.
- Support alignment of target outcomes and operational realism across subsurface-to-production workflows.
- Digital / AI Use Case Delivery Support (Non-Coding)
- Translate subsurface requirements into technical inputs for delivery teams (features, inputs, constraints, classifications), ensuring feasibility and traceability.
- Support domain inputs across upstream analytics / AI solution areas such as:
- Reservoir performance analytics and forecasting
- Production surveillance / optimization linkages
- Well performance diagnostics and root cause analysis
- Decline analysis and anomaly detection
- Field development planning decision support
- Review and validate analytics / AI outputs and dashboards for domain realism and engineering alignment; escalate concerns and recommendations to the Manager.
- Stakeholder Management & Client-Facing Delivery
- Engage with subsurface teams, production interface stakeholders, and technical teams to gather structured feedback and convert it into actionable requirements/backlog items.
- Support pilot deployments and phased rollouts by coordinating feedback cycles and tracking issue resolution with delivery teams.
- Support preparation of stakeholder-ready narratives and inputs for proposals / solution articulation aligned to subsurface transformation priorities.
- Governance, Quality & Assurance
- Support definition and application of data quality checks, engineering assumptions, and validation checkpoints for subsurface datasets and model outputs.
- Contribute to playbooks, solution documentation, and governance artifacts for deployed use cases.
- Support UAT planning and execution; document findings and confirm outputs are credible and usable for engineering decision-making.
Required Experience & Qualifications
- 3–6 years of upstream Oil & Gas experience with strong subsurface depth (Reservoir / Production / Petroleum Engineering).
- Practical understanding of subsurface workflows (not theory-only), including uncertainty handling and data quality considerations.
- Strong communication and structured documentation skills; ability to translate engineering concepts clearly to non-engineers and technical teams.
- Demonstrated cross-functional delivery experience spanning engineering / operations / digital teams.
- Fluency in English (mandatory).
- Engineering Degree in Chemical / Mechanical / Instrumentation / Petroleum disciplines
- Experience from/with IOC environments and particularly Exxon Mobil / Shell / BP-type operating models.
Preferred / Nice-to-Have
- Exposure to AI, advanced analytics, digital transformation, optimization, or surveillance initiatives in upstream contexts.
- Familiarity with engineering / digital tools (surveillance systems, production databases, BI tools).
- Arabic language capability (optional).
