EY's Strategy and Transactions (SaT) practice offers strategic corporate clients and private equity clients professional transaction advice and services, from the strategic analysis phase of the transaction lifecycle, through execution, to transaction integration. We help clients determine the right deal to do, and then assist them in doing the deal right.

 

The opportunity

Within SaT, Minvest teams advise our clients and the broader EY on a variety of issues concerning mining investments, mineral resource estimations, technical reviews, mineral asset valuations, financing and strategic options within the minerals, and oil and gas industries. The Minvest team is a specialised team of experienced technical professionals including environmental scientists, petroleum engineers, geologists, mining engineers and chemical engineers. We currently have an exciting new opportunity for different mining professionals with different levels of experience based in Johannesburg, South Africa.

 

Your key responsibilities

This exciting opportunity includes specialist understanding of the mining and/or oil and gas industry in order to support our clients in resource modelling and estimation, providing geological input to the evaluation of exploration properties for development through to production assets. Providing geological investigations and input for studies on new projects and opportunities. Specialist input and providing financing and strategic options within the minerals, and oil and gas industries as well as providing geological due diligence into mineral asset valuation. This role involves growing our Minvest business and mentoring and training of our staff.

 

Skills and attributes for success

The role will require a firm understanding of the mining and/or oil and gas industry with technical consulting experience in the following, but not limited, disciplines:

  • Advising mining and/or oil and gas clients on financial and strategic optionality (will be an advantage)
  • Experience in QAQC, data analysis and validation.
  • Basic geological modelling and Mineral Resource estimation experience in 3D modelling software.
  • Technical Due Diligence and Review for Audit purposes as well as Independent External reviews.
  • Optimisation and operational improvement studies for clients (Will be an advantage).
  • Excellent communication skills including report writing and presentation skills is a MUST.
  • Experience in International Public Reporting Codes including but not limited to: SAMREC, NI43-101, JORC, SK1300 and other.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Experience in assisting a Competent Person in Mineral Resource estimation processes.
  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of the mining value-chain.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching through succession planning to allow for growth and development of junior staff members.
  • Mineral asset valuation experience (will be an advantage).
  • Previous consulting experience is advantageous.
  • Willingness to travel to remote locations

In the role the applicant will be required to execute on proposals, project management and timeous invoicing. The role may require travel from time-to-time to remote locations.

The role is suitable to a person who has gained experience in mine and/or exploration geology and has begun to develop competence in Mineral Resource estimation.

 

To qualify for the role you must have

  • As a minimum a Bachelor's degree in a related discipline such as Petroleum Engineering or Geology.
  • 3-5 years relevant practical mining experience at a mining operation or consulting company.
  • Professional registration.
  • Strong interpersonal and communications skills, with the ability to building internal and external networks.
  • Strong computer skills including MS Excel, Word, PowerPoint and general report writing skills

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • A holder or studying towards a Masters in the field of mining or financial and accounting qualification
  • Previous consulting experience
