Employment Lawyer – Bangalore

The opportunity

As an Employment lawyer, you will be  responsible for providing Employee Relations (ER) support and employment legal advice, in line with the organisation’s compliance, obligations and the overall Group Capability Centre (GCC) business strategy and aspirations.

Your key responsibilities

•            Working with Talent & Culture (T&C) and business stakeholders, this role will mainly focus on providing advice in relation to people matters, employment litigation, ER policy, regulatory matters, labour codes, projects. It will also focus on managing complex ER cases.

•            To develop strong collaborative relationships globally with ER colleagues and various stakeholders including senior executives, Talent and Culture T&C Heads and external lawyers.

•            This role will be key in diagnosing gaps in compliance and people policies, identifying and designing new codes, and bringing knowledge of external factors and Labour law and other political nuances.

•            The role will identify regulatory compliant solutions that align with our strategic goals, focusing on behavioural change.

Your work will also include:

  • Providing specialist ER services and strategic leadership to senior management, T&C Heads, consultants and advisors to further develop organisation’s HR capabilities, People Strategy and business goals.

  • Providing expert advice for the management of employment law matters and employment related litigation in tribunals and courts which have implications across org and/or brand/reputational risks, particularly in India.

  • Keeping across key developments in India employment law, labour legislation and regulation and providing proactive and strategic advice to relevant stakeholders e.g. Gratuity, Provident Fund, Apprentices Act, Labour Codes etc.

  • Managing and maintaining relationships with legal service providers in India, and briefing out to them when necessary.

  • Independently supporting and managing complex ER matters across Asia Europe and America (AEA), conducting workplace investigations, resolving employee grievances, and supporting the parties to resolve issues themselves, particularly in India.

  • Identifying and addressing areas for continuous improvement relating to ER and the T&C function.

  • Coaching and mentoring and supervising other members of the ER AEA team.

  • Able to provide legal guidance and advice on a wide range of employment-related issues in India including, but not limited to, hiring practices, employment contracts, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour laws, employee benefits, termination procedures, and regulatory compliance.

  • Collaborate with relevant stakeholders to develop, review and implement employment policies and procedures that are compliant with local laws, as well as align with ANZ's values and goals.

  • Manage employment-related disputes, claims and litigation matters, including but not limited to, EEOC charges, discrimination claims, wage disputes, and wrongful termination lawsuits. This includes working closely with external legal counsel when necessary.

  • Monitor changes in employment laws and regulations, assess their impact on ANZ, and recommend proactive measures to ensure compliance and mitigate potential risks.

  • Independently manage grievances and conduct internal investigations into complaints of workplace misconduct, discrimination, harassment, or other policy violations, ensuring thoroughness, fairness, and compliance with legal requirements (along with the other T&C Consultants in the ER AEA team).

  • Assess employment legal risks associated with T&C initiatives, business strategies and operational decisions, providing proactive advice to mitigate risks and avoid potential legal liabilities.

  • High ethical standards and a commitment to maintain confidentiality and integrity.

  • Demonstrate ability to work independently and collaboratively, and manage multiple priorities simultaneously

To qualify for the role, you must have:

14+ years of experience and a degree in Law.
