Join EY’s Tax Controversy and Risk Management (TCRM) team and help clients navigate complex and commercially important tax issues. As one of the largest tax dispute resolution teams in the UK, we bring together expertise in HMRC engagement, enquiries, disclosures, governance, litigation support and tax risk management within EY’s broader International Tax and Transaction Services practice. The opportunity
Businesses are facing increasing scrutiny from tax authorities, greater transparency expectations and more complex risk management requirements. Our TCRM team supports clients at every stage of the controversy lifecycle, from proactive risk identification and governance through to HMRC enquiries, disclosures, negotiations and resolution. We are interested in speaking to tax professionals from a range of backgrounds, including tax controversy, corporate tax compliance and advisory, tax risk management, governance, investigations, litigation support or HMRC, who are motivated to build experience in this fast-growing area.
Your key responsibilities:
- Support the delivery of a broad range of tax controversy, risk management and HMRC engagement projects, helping to provide high-quality client service
- Assist clients and EY teams in assessing tax risk, developing practical approaches and supporting matters involving enquiries, disclosures, governance reviews, negotiations and settlements
- Build effective working relationships with clients, HMRC stakeholders and EY colleagues across tax, law, consulting, assurance, and strategy and transactions
- Contribute to technical, procedural, commercial and reputational analysis on tax disputes and risk matters, with support from senior team members
- Support proposals, internal initiatives, client relationship activities and the development of new service offerings
- Assist clients with tax governance, transparency and reporting matters, including tax strategy, SAO, Business Risk Review+, controls testing and wider tax risk frameworks
- Work collaboratively with colleagues at all levels, sharing knowledge and contributing to an inclusive, supportive team environment
- Use technology, data and emerging tools, including AI-enabled solutions, to improve the way tax controversy and risk management services are delivered
Skills and attributes for success
- Experience or a strong interest in tax controversy, with a background in corporate tax, tax risk, tax governance, investigations, litigation support, HMRC or another relevant advisory environment
- Good tax technical knowledge, with a willingness to apply and develop this knowledge in practical client situations
- Good organisational skills, including the ability to manage tasks, deadlines and competing priorities with appropriate support
- The ability to identify risks, exercise judgement, ask questions and escalate matters when needed
- A collaborative approach, with the ability to work across disciplines, sectors and geographies to deliver strong outcomes for clients
- Curiosity, adaptability and an interest in innovation, including the use of technology, data and AI tools to improve client delivery
- A commercial, client-focused mindset and the ability to build effective working relationships
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain issues clearly and concisely
To qualify for the role you must have:
- Relevant professional experience in tax, HMRC, legal, accounting, advisory or risk management roles, ideally involving tax matters, large businesses or regulated environments
- A recognised tax, accounting or legal qualification such as CTA , ACA, CA, or progress towards one of these qualifications; applications from candidates with HMRC technical training (TSP or predecessor courses) or comparable experience are also welcomed
- The ability to work effectively as part of a team, take ownership of assigned tasks, develop client-facing skills and deliver high-quality work in a fast-paced environment
