IT/Software Manager - R&D Tax Consultant - Manchester

An exciting opportunity to work in EY’s Innovation Incentives team in North England. The candidate would preferably be based in Manchester or Leeds although consideration would be given for Hull. 

 

EY’s Innovation Incentives team is a specialist team made up of scientist and engineers as well as tax and accounting professionals. Serving a variety of high profile clients (FTSE 100 and 250 multinational companies to fast-growing tech start-ups), we support companies in claiming the R&D tax credits and applying for cash grants which were introduced by the government to encourage UK companies to invest in innovation.

 

The successful candidate will get the opportunity to work as part of the wider Business Tax Advisory group of EY, in a diverse team of highly successful tax and industry specialists.  
 
Our team helps clients identify projects that go beyond routine software development and enter the remit of being a technological advancement; as these projects could potentially be eligible for tax breaks.  You will be required to work closely with senior and lead engineers of our clients across the relevant sectors and will be responsible for analysing scientific and technological aspects of their R&D projects. You will play an active role in developing technical reports of clients’ projects and taking part in extensive client communication.  

 

The opportunity

This offers an exciting opportunity for motivated individuals with a background in IT and/or Software Engineering to join EY’s fast growing and highly successful Innovation Incentives team.  The team are looking for experienced and enthusiastic engineers to be part of a growing and dynamic National practice. This role would suit someone coming from an IT consulting firm or with a strong programming background that is looking to widen their skill set and have broader client exposure.

 

You will be required to lead R&D tax engagements with clients and work closely with lead engineers and the finance & tax departments of our clients across different sectors. You will be responsible for the high quality delivery of our claims and play an active role in delivery of the R&D reports for submission to HMRC and taking part in extensive client communication.  
 
Your key responsibilities:

  • Manage the successful delivery of R&D tax services to the client 
  • Review technical project reports to bring out the key technical factors of client projects to support R&D tax claims  
  • Support the development of junior engineers in the team
  • Build and maintain relationships with clients and provide high levels of client service 
  • Build relationships both within the firm and externally with clients, identifying opportunities and managing expectations 
  • Contribute to winning new work by proactively managing existing clients and contribute to winning new clients. 
  • Responsible for day-to-day client liaison 

 

Skills and attributes for success:

  • Experienced R&D tax practitioner 
  • Proven ability to read and interpret existing and new tax statute 
  • Ability to pick-up new technologies (e.g. platforms, API’s, frameworks) quickly, and be comfortable in discussing them in-depth
  • Desire to understand the latest, cutting edge, technologies used by a variety of businesses
  • Strong technical writing skills with the ability to communicate complex technical paradigms to both technical and lay audiences
  • Strong communication skills and confidence in speaking, as the role requires holding one-to-one meetings with our clients technical staff, from developer-level to Chief Technology Officer
  • Highly motivated self-starter, with a proven track record in taking initiatives, whilst also having a collaborative and team building attitude

 

To qualify for the role you must have:

  • Engineering or IT/Software degree qualified
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills and a collaborative approach to management  
  • The flexibility to constantly learn and adapt in a fast-paced environment  

 

Ideally, you’ll also have:

  • Project management skills, plan and prioritize work, meet deadlines, monitor own budget 
  • Work experience in your chosen industry as an engineer or scientist
