Hei Oranga Iwi | The opportunity
Ready to embark on your next big career move? We're seeking to add a dynamic Senior Manager to our strong and vibrant Private Tax team in Christchurch. You will have the opportunity to run with fast paced startups, mingle with high net worth individuals, and engage with established private businesses. This opportunity doesn’t end with client interactions though. What makes this role truly exciting is the chance to shape the future.
As a Senior Manager, you'll be pivotal in laying the foundation blocks for our future growth. Whilst the role is based in Christchurch, you will also be instrumental in driving the national practice and supporting clients across New Zealand. This is more than a job; it's a chance to drive progress, inspire teams, and create an overarching influence on the direction of our dynamic, ever-evolving team.
Here at EY, we pride ourselves on the collaborative, flexible and entrepreneurial environment we work in. You will have the freedom to innovate and shape your career in a way that suits you, with support from our comprehensive development programs, EY badges and established networks. We want to help you be the best version of yourself, both inside and outside of work. EY’s purpose is to Build a Better Working World – for our clients and for our people.
Ko Tō Rourou | Your key responsibilities
Drawing on your skills and experience in accounting and tax compliance and advisory, you will also provide advice that covers structuring, budgeting, forecasting, growth, strategy, succession planning and more. Private clients have a range of needs that vary on any given day. It will be your role to be a truly trusted advisor and manage a large client base. This will also include being active in our market both locally and nationally, well connected within the business and referral networks, as well as identifying opportunities to network and develop new business. In addition:
- You will work closely with the leadership team to coordinate and manage our national practice.
- Keep abreast of technology and have a future view of what our clients may need and therefore how we will deliver.
- Deliver a comprehensive range of accounting and taxation advisory and compliance services tailored to client needs.
- Lead and mentor the team, including managers, senior consultants, consultants, and graduates, acting as a 'Counsellor' for junior members, fostering their professional development, and contributing to a positive team culture that encourages high performance, collaboration, and celebrates achievements.
Ngā Pūkenga | Skills and attributes for success
This role requires a senior, well‑rounded private tax professional who brings strong technical judgement, commercial awareness, and people leadership. We’re interested in how you apply your expertise in practice, how you lead and develop others, and how you continue to grow in a changing regulatory and market environment.
Here’s our ‘wish list’ but don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes. We’re interested in your strengths, what you want to learn, and how far you want to go.
- Deep technical capability across New Zealand taxation, including advanced accounting and financial reporting knowledge, with the ability to interpret and apply legislation in a practical, commercial way.
- Proven experience managing a significant portfolio of private clients, leading complex engagements, prioritising competing demands, and confidently building relationships with senior stakeholders.
- Strong people leadership skills, including coaching and developing junior team members, encouraging collaboration, and fostering open communication within a high‑performing team.
- A curious, agile and progressive mindset, staying current with market and regulatory developments, balancing technical and commercial acumen, and remaining mindful of the broader impact of advice on clients, society and the environment.
