Hands-on architecture leadership for EY Fabric, EY’s global technology platform

This is an architecture role for someone who combines strategic judgement with practical engineering delivery. The successful applicant will shape direction and define robust designs, while staying close to implementation through prototyping, code and design reviews, technical problem-solving and direct collaboration with engineering teams.

The opportunity and EY Fabric

EY Fabric is EY’s global foundational technology platform for building, running and scaling technology solutions. It brings together reusable cloud, data, intelligence, developer and business-enablement capabilities, supported by self-service workflows and built-in governance, so teams can deliver secure products faster and more consistently.

In this role, you will be part of the Client Technology Architecture function and will work within a team leading key aspects of the architecture of EY Fabric, part of the wider Fabric engineering function. You will work across business, product, architecture, security, platform and engineering teams to translate outcomes into pragmatic technical direction and successful delivery.

The role spans the full delivery lifecycle. You will help shape product vision and roadmaps, develop architecture options and detailed designs, support planning and investment decisions, and remain actively engaged hands-on as solutions are built, tested, operated and improved. You will be expected to move comfortably between senior stakeholder conversations and detailed technical work with engineers, doing hands-on coding and engineering where needed to progress work through to production.

Key responsibilities

  • Partner with Product Managers and other stakeholders to understand business needs, clarify requirements and translate them into pragmatic product and platform architecture.
  • Lead aspects of the EY Fabric architecture, owning or guiding the technology and design direction for assigned platform capabilities from early concept and option analysis through delivery, adoption, operation and evolution.
  • Ensure designs work coherently across EY Fabric, including its platform APIs, developer workflows, portal and user experience, reusable cloud capabilities, identity and access patterns, data services, observability and integration points.
  • Produce clear architecture blueprints, designs, architectural decision records, reference patterns and implementation guidance, using your judgement as to what is required.
  • Design secure, scalable and reusable services, APIs, integration patterns, datastores, user-facing capabilities and common platform components.
  • Work directly with engineering teams to turn architecture into working software, including hands-on prototyping, proof-of-concept development, code review, pair design, troubleshooting and design assurance.
  • Solve complex problems where an established solution may not exist by evaluating technologies, testing assumptions, considering build-versus-buy options and presenting evidence-based recommendations.
  • Provide technical leadership throughout delivery, ensuring implemented solutions remain aligned with the intended architecture, quality expectations and enterprise standards.
  • Participate in product and delivery planning, estimation and forecasting; manage architecture work and technical debt; balance cost, risk, quality, security, maintainability and time to market.
  • Mentor engineers and architects, encourage experimentation and knowledge sharing, and contribute to architecture and engineering communities.
  • Monitor relevant technology and industry trends, including AI-assisted engineering, and apply them responsibly where they provide measurable value.

Required skills and experience

  • Significant experience in solution or technical architecture within complex, large-scale product or internal developer platform environments, with a strong record of successful implementation and adoption.
  • Demonstrable hands-on software engineering capability in at least one modern language such as C#, Java, JavaScript/TypeScript or Python, together with confidence reading, reviewing and improving production code.
  • Broad architecture experience across cloud-native applications, integration, data and security, with the judgement to balance governance, technical quality and delivery pace.
  • Practical Microsoft Azure or other cloud experience across compute, storage, networking, security and identity, including Entra ID, RBAC, Key Vault, Azure Policy and tenant-aware identity patterns.
  • Expertise designing distributed and scalable products and platforms using APIs, microservices, containers and Kubernetes, preferably AKS, across cloud or hybrid environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD, automated testing and DevSecOps practices.
  • Knowledge of modern API design and API Management, including topics such as security, versioning, discoverability, etc.
  • Understanding of secure-by-design practices, compliance expectations, in-application security and operation within enterprise technology standards.
  • Experience designing for reusability, reliability, maintainability, observability, performance, cost optimisation and effective technical debt management.
  • Working knowledge of architecture and design patterns, including microservices, containerised systems, event-driven architecture, data streaming and data platforms.
  • Strong analytical, collaboration and communication skills, including the ability to explain complex decisions to senior stakeholders and work effectively across globally distributed teams.

Desirable experience

  • InnerSource, internal developer platforms, reusable engineering assets, platform marketplaces or shared-services models.
  • AI-assisted and agentic engineering tools and workflows, with an understanding of appropriate security, quality and governance controls.
  • Low-code or no-code capabilities, workflow automation, enterprise user-experience patterns, data management or data governance.
  • Architecture or security certifications such as Azure Solutions Architect Expert, Azure Security Engineer, TOGAF, SAFe or comparable credentials.
  • A relevant degree or equivalent practical experience in engineering, computer science, information technology or a related discipline.

What we are looking for

A self-starting, collaborative architect who enjoys solving difficult problems and taking responsibility for outcomes. You should be equally credible with senior stakeholders and engineering teams, comfortable operating across multiple initiatives, and willing to engage directly in design and implementation detail. This role suits someone who views architecture as an active delivery discipline and who can lead through both influence and practical contribution.
