An exciting opportunity to work in EY GDS’s Business Tax Advisory – Quantitative Services (“QS”) group with a diverse team of highly successful tax specialists in Global Grants, Credits & Incentives practice. You will support companies in analysing the complex tax issues associated with the treatment of expenditures incurred for research and development work to claim R&D Tax credits and incentives. As a GDS-QS team member and based in Budapest, you will also be part of an exciting, rapidly growing team of tax professionals who support a suite of similar tax services across a variety of clients in Ireland.

It will also require you to have strong, board technical industry knowledge and hands on experience in IT, software, or high-technology sectors. This role will suit experienced and enthusiastic engineers who are driven to learn about new technologies and industry trends,
widen their technical knowledge and have more, broader client and commercial exposure.
You will be required to work closely with our client’s C-suite executives, technologists, and engineers across a diverse range of sectors, such as technology, social networking, telecommunication, cloud computing, financial services, software product development and so much more. Your role will involve being responsible for critically analysing the scientific and technological aspects of a client’s R&D project. You will play an active role in client discussion and creation of technical deliverables for our clients’. You will collaborate with your team in Ireland to deliver R&D tax claims for clients and will be offered the opportunity to work with the EY’s global R&D network to deliver multi jurisdiction projects aligned to the global nature of the Engineering/IT/software sector.
Your key responsibilities
Supporting our Ireland Advisory for R&D Incentives team, you will advise clients on the use of public funding for global and local innovation and sustainability projects. Wide range of tasks involved in this role are:
- Working as an effective member of a project team, to Interview the clients’ senior technical and engineering staff in order to develop an understanding of the technical characteristics of the projects undertaken.
- Facilitate application of Irish Revenue’s guidelines to identify which R&D projects or aspects of projects are eligible for tax relief.
- Writing detailed technical project reports describing the technological objectives, advancements, and uncertainties of the clients’ projects, to support the R&D tax claim.
- Ability to provide practical approaches and solutions to situations and apply critical thinking to ensure the delivery of the project work products.
- Working with the EY R&D global network to deliver multi jurisdiction projects aligned to the global nature of the engineering/IT/technology sector.
- Responsible for high-quality delivery of advice and solutions to major clients, ensuring management of risk and reputation.
- Supporting in the successful delivery of technically complex and demanding consulting projects, ensuring technical excellence and practical/business driven approach taken.
- Building and maintaining relationships with clients to provide high levels of client service.
- Maintaining up to date technical and tax technical knowledge.
Skills and attributes for success
To qualify for the role, you must have
- You have excellent spoken and written formal business English, communicating clearly and concisely in phone calls and via email.
- PhD or master’s in computer science/IT.
- In-depth technical expertise in your discipline and understanding the commercial/technical issues faced in the technology sector.
- You have the ability to swiftly adapt to and learn about different technologies utilised by our clients, such as: SOCs, semiconductors, Hadoop/Spark, Docker, cloud technologies, Data Science, database engineering, database technologies, programming languages (such as .NET, JSON, SQL, Python, Java, Perl, C++, JavaScript, Objective-C, Ruby, C, Haskell, R, Scala, GoLang etc), Big Data Processing (Lambda architecture), scripting languages, as well as web and mobile technologies.
- You have experience in dealing with technological challenges faced by professionals in the field during the design, development, implementation and testing of technological solutions.
- Ability to assist in defending technical aspects of R&D tax claims (previous R&D tax experience is not a necessity; this is something that the successful candidate will learn on the job).
- Strong client relationship management skills with the ability to understand client’s needs and deliver quality outputs to clients.
- Strong communication and project management skills, with the ability to work in a team based and consultancy environment.
- Have excellent technical report writing, interpersonal, communication, interviewing skills and presenting ability.
- A keen desire to adapt and flex existing knowledge to different engineering sectors and build on the core capabilities.
- Ability to identify and manage areas of risk, know when to refer upwards, demonstrate good judgement, objectivity, and independence.
- Strong attention to detail and first-time accuracy is essential.
- You must feel comfortable discussing technical themes with clients in a personable and professional manner.
