The opportunity

Climate change is driving an unprecedented transformation in the global energy sector. The energy industry is transitioning to a low carbon, decentralised future, facing a wide range of engineering and economic challenges along the way. The scale of infrastructure development needed to transform our energy sector is immense with transactions in the energy sector expected to continue to grow over the next decade. Do you want to be part of this journey in our growing team?

EY-ROAM is a leading provider of electricity market modelling services in Australia and New Zealand. Our role in the energy industry is to provide evidence-based insights, enabling our clients to make informed decisions amidst uncertainty and change, cutting through the complexity to provide actionable insights.

We have developed software that can be used to model any electricity market or power system and has been used to model power systems and electricity markets in Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, India, Mexico and Africa. Our clients span the energy value chain including renewable energy and storage developers, energy sector investors, transmission and distribution network service providers, retailers, regulators and governments.

We are looking for a Senior Consultant or Manager (Power Systems Modelling) to join our growing team. You will be joining a high performing, market leading team that contributes to solving our client’s biggest challenges. You will be joining a team that values collaboration, are open to challenges and is growth minded, with mentoring relationships a key enabler for your career development.

This is a hybrid position based in Meanjin – Brisbane or Warrang – Sydney.

Your key responsibilities

Our market models use a physics first approach where accurate representation of the power system and its limits are key.  As a power system engineer within EY-ROAM you will be a specialist network expert within our broader our electricity market modelling team.

You’ll contribute to developing power system models and methodologies to support our electricity market modelling and for the delivery of bespoke power system studies. You will translate current and future network states into models, including creating power flow and constraint equations.

Our work involves:

  • Helping our clients undertake market due diligence to support the development, financing, acquisition, sale and valuation of grid-scale batteries, pumped hydro, solar farms and wind farms,
  • Forecasting the feasibility of decarbonising electricity systems before 2040, including assessing the reliability and security of power systems,
  • Assessing the impacts on the grid of major transmission network augmentations including HumeLink, Marinus Link and VNI West based on extensive electricity market models,
  • Informing the development of government policy including the NSW Electricity Infrastructure Roadmap and the Western Australia Whole of System Plan.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Tertiary education in electrical engineering or a related field,
  • The ability to perform power systems studies (e.g. power flow, stability, system strength and other related topics), and provide network-focussed insights to support the broader team,
  • Proficiency in analysing network-related publications and reports to track anticipated changes and developments in Australia, with a strong ability to gather, interpret and synthesize data to deliver precise, up-to-date network-focussed recommendations,
  • A solid understanding of electricity market concepts, including regulatory frameworks and market operations, marginal loss factors, ancillary services (familiarity with Australian market is especially valuable),
  • Proficiency in Python, particularly for automating workflows and analysing large data sets, is advantageous,

Ideally, you’ll also have the skills and attributes below but don’t worry if you don’t tick all the boxes. We’re interested in your aptitude, attitude and willingness to learn

  • The ability to work with our broader electricity market modelling team to inform power system planning and network development planning,
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently while managing multiple tasks and deadlines, and
