We are looking for an experienced Audit Manager to join our External Audit team in Malawi and contribute to the delivery of high-quality audits, trusted client relationships and a better working world for our people, clients and communities.

About the opportunity

As part of Assurance team, you will help clients meet their financial reporting and regulatory obligations by leading the delivery of external audit and assurance engagements. You will work with clients across the Malawi market, applying EY’s audit methodology, International Financial Reporting Standards, International Standards on Auditing and relevant local statutory and regulatory requirements. This role offers the opportunity to lead teams, manage client relationships, contribute to audit quality and support the assurance practice in Malawi.

Your key responsibilities

  • Lead the planning, execution and reporting of external audit engagements, ensuring work is delivered to a high standard and in line with EY methodology, International Standards on Auditing and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Manage audit fieldwork at client sites, including coordination with engagement teams, clients and other EY service lines to ensure smooth and timely delivery.
  • Evaluate audit risk, accounting technical matters and key judgement areas, providing practical guidance to engagement teams and escalating matters appropriately.
  • Review audit work prepared by team members and ensure appropriate documentation, evidence and quality standards are maintained before sign-off.
  • Apply a practical, solution-focused approach to resolving audit and client service issues.
  • Identify areas for improvement in clients’ business processes, controls and financial reporting, and prepare clear, value-adding management letter points and recommendations.
  • Build and maintain strong client relationships while identifying opportunities to connect clients with relevant EY services where appropriate.

Your people responsibilities

  • Organize engagement teams effectively by ensuring roles, responsibilities, timelines and expectations are clearly defined.
  • Coach, guide and develop junior team members, providing timely feedback and input into performance review processes.
  • Promote effective teamwork, collaboration and knowledge sharing across engagements.
  • Provide on-the-job training to build audit technical skills, professional judgement and familiarity with EY’s audit methodology.
  • Contribute to an inclusive and high-performing team environment where people are supported to learn, grow and deliver quality work.

Skills and attributes for success

  • Strong technical knowledge of IFRS, International Standards on Auditing and external audit quality requirements.
  • Sound understanding of audit quality, risk management and compliance procedures.
  • Strong technical judgement in higher-risk audit areas, including revenue, financial instruments, estimates, taxation and other complex financial reporting matters.
  • Strong project management skills, with the ability to manage deadlines, multiple priorities and engagement economics.
  • Excellent communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to lead teams, manage performance and keep engagement leaders informed on audit progress, risks and key matters.
  • Commercial awareness and the ability to understand clients’ businesses, industries and operating environments.
  • Comfort with audit technology, data analytics and digital audit approaches to enhance audit quality and efficiency.

Qualifications and requirements

  • Fully qualified professional accountant with ACCA or an equivalent qualification.
  • Minimum of 5–7 years’ external audit experience, including demonstrated experience leading audit engagements and managing teams; prior manager-level experience is preferred.
  • Significant experience leading the planning, execution and reporting of external audit and assurance engagements.
  • Proven experience in delivering audits in line with IFRS, International Standards on Auditing and applicable local statutory and regulatory requirements.
  • Strong understanding of the Malawi business and regulatory environment will be an added advantage.
  • Experience within an international professional services environment will be an added advantage.
  • Experience using audit technology, data analytics tools or digital audit approaches will be an added advantage.
