Backend Development Manager – .NET / Azure
Role Summary
The Backend Development Manager is responsible for leading the design, development, and delivery of scalable backend platforms using .NET, Azure, and modern API architectures.
This role combines hands-on technical leadership, team management, and delivery ownership, ensuring high-quality, secure, and performant backend systems. You will drive architecture decisions, mentor engineering teams, and partner with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver enterprise-grade solutions.
Key Responsibilities
Technical Leadership & Architecture
- Lead the design and architecture of scalable backend systems and microservices.
- Define standards for API design, security, performance, and scalability.
- Ensure adoption of best practices in C#, .NET Core, asynchronous programming, and distributed systems.
- Drive architectural decisions for cloud-native solutions on Azure.
- Review and approve technical designs and critical implementations.
Backend Development Excellence
- Oversee development of RESTful APIs and backend services.
- Ensure high-quality code through standards, design patterns, and code reviews.
- Guide teams in performance optimization, reliability, and maintainability.
- Ensure use of best practices such as dependency injection, middleware, and error handling.=
Cloud & Platform Ownership (Azure)
- Lead deployment and management of backend services on Azure App Services and cloud platforms.
- Establish standards for monitoring, logging, and observability using Application Insights.
- Ensure high availability, resilience, and incident management processes.
- Drive cloud cost optimization and infrastructure scalability.
Team Management & Mentorship
- Manage and mentor a team of backend developers and senior engineers.
- Conduct performance reviews, career development planning, and hiring.
- Foster a culture of ownership, accountability, and continuous learning.
- Provide technical coaching and guidance to senior and junior team members
Delivery & Stakeholder Management
- Own end-to-end backend delivery for multiple projects or programs.
- Collaborate with product owners, QA, DevOps, and architecture teams.
- Drive sprint planning, estimations, and release management.
- Manage risks, dependencies, and ensure timely delivery.
Data & Integration Strategy
- Oversee usage of SQL Server / Azure SQL and backend data architecture.
- Ensure database performance tuning, data integrity, and scalable design.
- Govern integrations with external APIs, authentication providers, and enterprise systems.
DevOps & Engineering Practices
- Promote CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and DevOps practices.
- Ensure adherence to Git-based workflows and release processes.
- Improve engineering productivity through tooling and automation.
Required Skills & Experience
Technical Expertise
- Strong experience in C#, .NET Core, and Web API development. []
- Deep understanding of REST APIs, microservices architecture, and distributed systems.
- Expertise in API security (OAuth2, JWT).
- Strong experience with SQL Server / Azure SQL databases.
- Hands-on experience with Azure (App Service, monitoring tools).
Leadership & Management
- Proven experience managing engineering teams (5–15 members typical).
- Strong experience in technical decision-making and architecture governance.
- Ability to balance hands-on development with leadership responsibilities.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with microservices and event-driven architectures
- Knowledge of containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
- Experience with high-scale, enterprise-grade systems.
- Exposure to Agile/Scrum delivery models.
Typical Experience
- 10–15+ years in backend development
- 3–5+ years in technical leadership or people management roles
