Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) is a technology platform which works alongside Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS) to support technical and commercial optimisation and dispatch. It includes gathering bids from Distributed Energy Resources (DER) and presenting an optimised view of the services to DSOs/TSOs. DERMS is the key component which provides advanced applications and algorithms such as load flow, forecasting, contingency analysis, state estimation & optimisation to automate management of distribution network and ensuring security of supply.

 

As Distributed Energy Resource Management System Architect in the team, you will build valued relationships with external clients and internal peers and support development of a portfolio of business by focusing on high impact opportunities.  Drawing on your skills and experience, you will create innovative technical insights for clients, adapt methods and practices to fit operational team and cultural needs, and contribute to thought leadership.  Driving improvements in business processes, you will support Quality & Risk Management (Q&RM) and make sure that project teams understand and comply with our Q&RM guidelines.

 

As a Distributed Energy Resource Management System Architect, you will be responsible for developing and implementing DERMS solutions and strategies required for enabling a smarter, flexible, active electricity systems for both DSO and TSO.

 

The successful candidate will lead design and development of automatic solutions for coordination and control of DERs. As a respected key professional, you will communicate effectively with EY senior managers, directors, partners, and work to build, manage and motivate high-performing teams, and coach and mentor junior consultants to build sustainable competencies.

 

 

Key Responsibilities include:

 

  • Design and implementation of Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) as technology platform which works alongside Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS).
  • Developing a technical route to market for Distributed Energy Resources (DER) to deliver active and reactive power services to the System Operator and constraint management to the System Operator.
  • Lead key technical development activities, such as establishing new products and services regarding Distribution System Operator (DSO) markets and Transmission System Operator (TSO) markets.
  • Manage day to day client projects, stakeholders and workstreams offering both technical and Project Management expertise.
  • Standardisation of operational power system grid security processes and automating these processes in DERMS.
  • Maintaining relationships with existing and future clients. This involves generating and maintaining customer-oriented technical material and participate or lead in their engagements.
  • Assess the evolution and impact of DSO operational control systems for large scale DER deployment, grid monitoring and control.
  • Advising our clients on the delivery of digital grid programmes and projects. Examples of typical client engagements for this role include:
    • Designing the integrated DERMS solutions for our power and utilities clients
    • Developing detailed activity, resource and cost plans for implementing integrated DERMS solutions
    • Supporting the procurement and evaluation of OT products and services (e.g. ADMS, DERMS, etc.)
    • Producing tender, procurement and legal documentation, supporting bids, valuation of tenders, and managing contracts
    • Designing end-to-end business processes in utility operations;
    • Designing system integration interfaces, including choice of middleware, technologies, standards, patterns to detailed message definition
    • Planning and managing development and delivery of integration interfaces, e.g. GIS, SCADA, market platforms, etc.
    • Designing, planning and managing delivery of utility/OT data engineering services common in these programmes, such as data assessments, collection, migration, validation, etc.
  • Maintaining relationships with existing and future clients. This involves generating and maintaining customer-oriented technical material and participating in or leading their engagements.
  • Collaborating to generate thought leadership articles and new digital grid insights to put into the market.
  • Building relationships with key stakeholders, both with the client and internal to EY.
  • Integrating into a high-performing, geographically dispersed team focused on winning in the market.

 

 

Knowledge and Skills Requirements:

 

  • Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS) system architecture and integration with ADMS, RTU and DER control system.
  • Deep understanding of algorithms needed for DERMS such as load flow, forecasting, contingency analysis, state estimation, optimisation.
  • Experience and knowledge on integrating DERMS with existing client legacy systems.
  • Experience of designing integrated DERMS/ADMS system architecture for large scale automatic control of DER against network constraints.
  • Design of DERMS operating with Market Management Systems (MMS) utilising flexibility services offered by DERs to address network congestion issues. 
  • Extensive experience of the data quality and requirements to get different DERMS applications working.
  • Understanding and experience of DER control system.
  • Power system and control knowledge and experience.
  • Experience of DERMS and DER control system architecture design with:
    • High availability and resilience.
    • SCADA communications.
    • ADMS/MMS integration.
    • SCADA control of DERs.
    • Communication protocols.
    • System integration and interfaces (e.g. front end processor (FEP)).
    • Database management.
    • Data quality.
    • Network Analysis Engine (e.g. Load flow, Forecaster, Optimiser).
    • User interface.
    • Common Information Model.
  • Designing automation with DERMS to identify network congestion, network overloads, optimum DER set points and dispatch via SCADA.
  • Deep understanding of communication protocols for design of centralised DERMS.
  • Extensive, proven experience working with projects in the Power and Utilities sector, including with systems and applications such as:
    • Market Management System (MMS).
    • Advanced Distribution Management Systems (ADMS).
    • Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS).
  • International consulting experience with established business relationships would be an advantage.
  • Proficiency in English language, with the ability to communicate both written and verbally at professional level – additional language skills would be appreciated.
  • Strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Ability to work under tight timelines for multiple project deliveries.
  • Willingness and ability to travel domestically and internationally to meet client needs.
  • Proven experience with Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) implementation projects and solutions of leading ADMS/DERMS vendors.
  • Experience working with projects in the power and utilities sector, including with systems and applications such as:
    • Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA),
    • Outage Management Systems (OMS),
    • Distribution Management Systems (DMS),
    • Distributed Energy Resource Management Systems (DERMS),
    • Demand Response Management Systems (DRMS),
    • Market Management Systems (MMS),
    • Substation automation (SA),
    • Distribution automation (DA),
    • Mobile Workforce Management (MWFM),
    • Geographic Information System (GIS),
    • Customer Information System (CIS),
    • Meter Data Management System (MDMS),
    • Data management and analytics,
    • Utility telecommunication networks.
  • Worked with other internal/external stakeholders to develop enabling technology solutions and market platforms, such as Distributed Energy Resource Management System (DERMS) and Market Management Systems (MMS).

 

 

Education:

 

  • BS/BA degree is essential (preferably, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science or similar technical degree) from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent experience
