Due to strong market growth, we are seeking a Senior Consultant or Manager to join EY’s Tax Policy and Controversy team in New Zealand. You will play a pivotal role in resolving complex tax disputes and influencing the future of tax policy, advising a diverse range of clients—from large corporates to entrepreneurial businesses and high-net-worth individuals.
This position offers significant variety, combining technical analysis, governance and control testing, commercial acumen, and the opportunity to drive strategic risk management initiatives. You will work at the forefront of tax developments, helping clients navigate regulatory change, get certainty and strengthen their tax governance frameworks.
Location: Auckland (Tāmaki Makaurau) preferred; however, for the right applicant, we would also consider Wellington (Te Whanganui-a-Tara) and Christchurch (Ōtautahi).
Ko Tō Rourou | Your key responsibilities
- Advise clients on complex tax issues, including controversy management, technical interpretations, and private binding ruling requests, enabling robust positions and compliance with evolving legislation.
- Design and implement tax governance frameworks and control testing programs, assessing operational effectiveness and supporting clients in meeting best practice standards.
- Prepare high-quality technical documentation, including dispute resolution submissions, technical advice papers, voluntary disclosures, penalty remission requests, private binding ruling application.
- Monitor and interpret legislative and regulatory developments, providing proactive insights on tax policy changes and their commercial implications.
- Collaborate with clients, regulators, and internal teams to deliver strategic solutions that balance compliance, risk management, and business objectives.

- Extensive experience in professional tax advisory, with a strong foundation in tax controversy management, technical research and interpretation, and policy analysis, complemented by commercial insight.
- Proven ability to manage complex assignments independently, applying sound judgment and strategic thinking to deliver outcomes in dispute resolution, governance control testing, and policy advocacy.
- Exceptional relationship-building skills, with a track record of engaging effectively with clients, regulators, and policymakers at all levels.
