Hei Oranga Iwi | The opportunity
This role is based in our Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland) office, you’ll work with a values-based team of amazing technologists who are always growing, learning, and adapting, both in and out of the office. As a Cyber Defence Technical Engagement Lead, you will be responsible for end-to-end technical leadership of our managed SOC services (covering threat monitoring, detection, response, threat hunting, and security engineering) across EY clients, with a particular focus on the Security Operations Centre (SOC) and cyber defence services.
You will operate as the primary responsible owner for assigned client services to shape technical direction, manage delivery, and act as the senior point of contact for clients. The role combines deep security domain knowledge, delivery management, and client leadership, and is suited to professionals who are comfortable owning outcomes rather than contributing to individual workstreams.
This position is best suited to experienced cyber practitioners who have operated as engagement leads, SOC leads, or technical delivery managers in complex environments.
Ko Tō Rourou | Your key responsibilities
- Provide end-to-end technical leadership across SOC and cyber defence engagements (monitoring, detection, response, threat hunting and security engineering).
- Oversee day-to-day SOC operations (incident triage, and response) and ensure service level agreements and key performance indicators are met, identifying opportunities to enhance processes and tooling over time.
- Define and drive the multi-year SOC capability roadmap (including IT/OT integration and advanced threat detection improvements) to continuously advance our service’s maturity.
- Own technical direction and quality—reviewing and challenging approaches, designs, and outputs to ensure they are risk-based, operationally viable, and aligned to client maturity.
- Lead engagement delivery to ensure work progresses predictably, dependencies are managed, and outcomes are usable and supportable.
- Act as the senior client-facing escalation point, leading operational forums and providing clear, credible technical updates and context.
- Identify, manage, and escalate technical, operational, and delivery risks in line with agreed governance, maintaining continuity of context across teams and stakeholders.
Ngā Pūkenga | Skills and attributes for success
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Security, Cyber Security, or related discipline or significant verifiable relevant experience; relevant industry certifications (e.g., CISSP, GCIH, Security+, SANS, CISM) highly regarded.
- 5-8 years’ experience in SOC / cyber defence roles with demonstrated progression in responsibility and leadership.
- Proven capability in security monitoring, incident response, and threat hunting, including threat intelligence analysis and hypothesis-driven investigations.
- Strong technical depth across SIEM/SOAR and endpoint/network security tooling, plus scripting/automation to improve operational efficiency.
- Experience with industrial control system (ICS) / OT security monitoring and frameworks (e.g., ISA/IEC 62443) is advantageous, though not mandatory.
- Excellent analytical and communication skills—able to lead teams, work under pressure, and engage effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
